About us

My name is Hilde Stromer-Twum and I live in the beautiful town of Landsberg am Lech in Upper Bavaria / Germany. More than 30 years ago I travelled to Ghana in West Africa for the first time. However, it was to take a few more years and a few more vacations before I visited a bead market. I was so fascinated by the variety of glass beads made from recycled glass.

Later I was introduced to the ancient and antique stone- and glass beads that are still found today in West Africa, especially in Mali and Mauritania. These beads are witnesses to a history that is often some thousands of years old when particularly beautiful stones were worked by hand in order to be used as a means of payment or adornment and were highly honored.

Later, colorful glass beads were made especially for the African trade, mostly in Europe, and were brought to Africa in large quantities as a means of exchange.

Not long after the beads, I discovered the colorful fabrics, in which I was particularly drawn to the "Tie-and-Dye"-Batiks fabrics and the Bogolan Mudcloths. These fabrics are usually made in small factories by women, who often support their families through this work and enable their children to go to school.
