The original Kiffa beads were made in Mauritania up until the 1970s in a laborious process of handwork from powdered glass and gum arabic and then painted with thin sticks and the finest workmanship. With the droughts and with the old generation of Kiffa beadmakers dying out, the skill to make these wonderful colorful beads was lost. Although Kiffa beads were produced again later, they are in no way comparable to these old beads and their finely drawn patterns.
There are a total of 31 Kiffa or Muraqat beads on the strand, of which 7 are triangle-shaped, 3 are cone-shaped and 5 are diamond-shaped.
Some of the beads show signs of wear in the form of chips.
In general, however, the pearls are in fairly good condition.
